# Regions

Last updated 2 November 2026

See which regions Tonbo runs in and what each offers, before you create a database, a stream or a Machine.

Tonbo runs in two regions, each an AWS region. One account and its API keys reach every region, and each database, stream or Machine lives in the one region you create it in.

## What each region offers

| Region | Location | Databases | Streams | Machines | Default |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `us-east-1` | US East (N. Virginia) | Yes | Yes | Not open yet | Yes |
| `ap-southeast-1` | Asia Pacific (Singapore) | Yes | Yes | Not open yet | |

A database or a stream whose creation names no region goes to the default, `us-east-1`. [Machines](https://tonbo.dev/docs/machines.md) are not open yet; they will run in the regions marked Not open yet.

## Choose a region

Create each database, stream or Machine near where the program that uses it runs. Every `synced()` of a database waits for a round trip to its region, and every append to a stream or read of it is a request to its region, so the distance is paid on every commit and every request. Choose the region when you create it:

- In the console, in the **Create database** or **Create stream** form.
- With the CLI, with `--region`, as in `tonbo database create notes --region ap-southeast-1`. `tonbo region list` lists the regions.
- Through the Management API, with `region` in the body of the create request, as in `{"name":"notes","region":"ap-southeast-1"}`.

## A region is fixed

A database’s, a stream’s or a Machine’s region is set when it is created and fixed for its life: none can be moved to another region. The [Databases guarantees](https://tonbo.dev/docs/databases/how-it-works.md#summary) state where a database’s data is kept, word for word: “The data stays in the region it was created in.” To take a database to another region, [export it](https://tonbo.dev/docs/databases/backups.md#export) and create a new one there.

## Origins

A program reaches a database or a stream at its region’s origin. A database’s URL adds your account’s id and its name (see [Regions and URLs](https://tonbo.dev/docs/databases/manage.md#regions)), and a stream’s adds your account’s id and `s.` with its name (see [Regions and URLs](https://tonbo.dev/docs/streams/manage.md#regions)). The console, the CLI and the API print each one’s full URL; use it as they print it.

| Region | Database origin | Streams origin |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `us-east-1` | `https://db.tonbo.dev` | `https://streams.tonbo.dev` |
| `ap-southeast-1` | `https://streams.ap-southeast-1.tonbo.dev` | `https://streams.ap-southeast-1.tonbo.dev` |

Asia Pacific (Singapore) serves databases and streams from one host, so a database URL in `ap-southeast-1` starts with `https://streams.ap-southeast-1.tonbo.dev`. That is by design: the URL is right, and only the path tells a database from a stream.

The console and the Management API, at `https://api.tonbo.dev`, are the same for every region.
