Frequently asked questions
What counts as a write?
One write is one SQLite transaction or stream append, up to 10 KiB. Precisely, each commit counts one write per 10 KiB (10,240 bytes) of its compressed size, and at least one, so a larger commit counts several. Creating a database's stream and each open that claims it count one write each.
What counts as storage?
What each database keeps: its latest snapshot and its log since the snapshot before it, billed at $0.05 / GiB × month over a 30-day month. Earlier snapshots are not counted. A snapshot is at most 256 MiB compressed, which bounds what each database keeps.
How does the free usage reset?
Every account gets $5 of usage each month, in any mix: about 3.3 million writes alone, ≈ 3.3 million writes with 1 GiB stored, or 100 GiB stored alone. It resets at the start of each month (UTC); what you do not use expires and does not carry over. It is used before any credit you buy.
How does prepaid credit work?
Buy credit in Usage & billing, from $5 to $5,000 in $1 steps. Usage draws on the free usage first, then on your credit. There is no subscription and no minimum, and no card is needed until you buy credit.
What happens when my balance runs out?
Writes pause and reads continue: the stream answers 402 with the code PAYMENT_REQUIRED, and your application keeps committing on its host while the commits wait. You are never charged past your credit. Within about 15 seconds of a top-up the stream takes writes again and the waiting commits reach it. See When the balance runs out.

How many streams can I have?
Up to 10000 per account, counted apart from your databases. Streams use the same prices and the same free usage as databases. For more, write to sales@tonbo.io.
Does the number of databases change the price?
No. You pay for writes and storage across all your databases; creating more databases costs nothing extra, up to 10000 per account. Only the one write that creates a database's stream counts.
Can Tonbo run in my own AWS account?
Yes, on Enterprise. Tonbo can be deployed into your AWS account, or keep your data in an S3 bucket you own. Write to sales@tonbo.io to set it up.
Do reads cost anything?
No. Reads are free, under fair use.
